Racial Justice Topic of Upcoming BeADisciple Online Course

A five-week study on the church’s role in pursuing racial justice will be offered by BeADisciple.com beginning Sept. 7. Facilitated by popular instructor Shirley Connally, the course’s main resource will be Jemar Tisby’s “How to Fight Racism: Courageous Christianity and the Journey Toward Racial Justice.” 

This study will offer the opportunity to come away with a clear model for how to think about race in productive ways and a compelling call to dismantle the social system based on skin color.  

Tisby’s book has been described as a handbook for pursuing racial justice with hands-on suggestions supported by real-world examples of change. He provides an opportunity for the church to be part of the solution and suggests that adapting principles he describes can offer hope that will transform the nation and world. Tisby encourages readers to reject passivity and to become active participants in the struggle for human dignity across racial and ethnic lines. 

Classes are held one hour each Thursday evening (6 to 7 p.m. CST).  

Connally is a teacher/counselor/minister who retired from public education with 36 years of experience as an English teacher and/or secondary counselor. She has served in ministry in the local church and community for most of her life. She was ordained after completing seminary while serving as an associate with three Baptist pastors and went on to serve as associate and senior pastor in The United Methodist Church.
